Teaching / Research Master's Degrees
Not all students at theological schools are preparing for professional ministry. Many schools offer degrees that orient students generally toward theological study or prepare them for advanced work in research and teaching. These degrees carry titles such as "Master of Arts in Theological Studies," "Master of Theological Studies," and "Master of Arts in Religion," though their names vary depending on the context in which they were developed.
Generally, these degrees are taken to gain breadth in the theological disciplines and to prepare for advanced programs such as the Ph.D. or Th.D. Students in these masters programs are often interested primarily in teaching and research. Therefore, these degrees usually specialize in a particular area while also exposing the student broadly to the academic study of theology and/or religion. While many of the degrees allow the student to specialize in "classical disciplines" (such as theology, ethics, or history), some schools offer these degree formats for the practical disciplines (such as counseling and education).
