Through its Undergraduate Fellowship program FTE seeks to support gifted young leaders from diverse racial and ethnic communities and a variety of Christian faith traditions who are exploring ministry as vocation. The program can provide both financial help and a nurturing network of support during a student's junior or senior year of college. How much difference does this make? A lot. Many students say the conferences and mentoring they've received from program staff and other participants have inspired, informed and kept them going at critical times. This network of support helps them realize they aren't alone as they explore and respond to a special calling.
To apply for this program, you must be a current sophomore or junior in an accredited undergraduate program at a North American college or university and have been nominated by a college faculty member, administrator, campus minister or current pastor. You must be considering ministry as a career (although it isn't necessary to have decided.) You must have a GPA of at least 3.0. You must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen. And you must have exceptional gifts for ministry: love of God and church, imagination, creativity, compassion, a capacity for critical thinking, leadership skills, personal integrity, spiritual depth, dedication to a faith tradition and a passion to understand and to serve the needs of others.
Undergraduate Fellows are awarded a stipend of $2,000 for the academic year for educational expenses or an experience of exploring ministry.
Each Fellow also attends the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry. A stipend is provided for conference travel and expenses. (Please note that attendance at the conference is a requirement of the fellowship.)
Up to 40 Undergraduate Fellows will be named for the upcoming academic year.
Being nominated: A college faculty member, administrator, chaplain or campus minister, or current pastor may nominate you for the fellowship. Nomination forms are available online. Your nomination must be received by FTE no later than February 1, 2010 in order for you to apply for the fellowship.
Applying for the fellowship: All nominees will be notified via email by FTE by February 1, 2010 and invited to apply for the 2010-2011 Undergraduate Fellowship. Applications are available to download. The application deadline is March 15, 2010.
This gathering will bring together new FTE Undergraduate, Congregational, and VEV Fellows with distinguished theologians, pastors and church leaders for several days of thoughtful exchange, including lectures, worship, forums, workshops, recreational activities and informal time together. For many Undergraduate Fellows, the experience provides a first-time opportunity to learn about theological education and ministry with peers who share their interests and questions. The conference fosters mentoring relationships as students explore ministry, service and the nature of Christian vocation. Fellows leave the conference with new tools for understanding their particular gifts in the context of the world's need.
The 2010 Conference on Excellence in Ministry will be held June 16-20, 2010 at Boston University School of Theology, Boston, MA
