Doctoral Fellowships are for African-American students entering doctoral programs who aspire to teach and do research as faculty in theological schools. The goal of this program is to increase the number of African-American students pursuing graduate degrees in religion or theology. African Americans are traditionally underrepresented in theological education and on the faculties of the nation's theological schools. FTE supports diversity—nearly two-thirds of the African-American scholars serving in theological education today are FTE Fellows.
To apply for an FTE Doctoral Fellowship, you must be an African-American student preparing to enter your first year of an accredited Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion or theology. You must be committed to becoming a leader within theological education and you must be giving strong consideration to teaching or conducting research in a theological school. You must also be a U.S. citizen.
If you're already enrolled in a graduate program, you are not eligible for this program, but you may be eligible for a Dissertation Fellowship or a North American Doctoral Fellowship.
Fellows receive a stipend of up to $18,000 from FTE. In addition, the recipient's institution must provide a full-tuition scholarship or remission as a condition of the award.
The Fellow may qualify to have the stipend renewed for a second year, depending on progress made toward the degree in the first year.
Each Fellow also attends FTE's Doctoral Conference. Expenses for conference attendance are included as part of the fellowship award. Fellows also receive a travel stipend to attend the annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature, as well as other professional development opportunities.
The deadline to apply for the 2008-2009 academic year has passed; we are no
longer accepting fellowship applications. Contact us to be notified when fellowship applications for the 2009-2010 academic year are posted this fall. Please be sure to include your name and e-mail address in the message.
This conference provides an opportunity for Doctoral and Dissertation Fellows to engage with religious and theological faculty, as well as peers, to discuss contemporary issues in religion and theology, scholarship and teaching. The conference includes lectures, panels and workshops. Expenses for conference attendance are included as part of the fellowship award.
The 2008 FTE Doctoral Conference will be held June 13 - 15, 2008 at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, in Atlanta, GA.
