Programs & Fellowships

From fellowships for prospective and current seminary students to recruitment initiatives for congregations, FTE offers many different kind of resources for many different needs through the programs described here. Financial help and a network of support for gifted, self-aware, imaginative students considering going into the ministry. Available to current sophomores and juniors, under 30, in accredited undergraduate programs at North American colleges and universities. Must be nominated by college faculty, administrators, campus ministers or current pastors.
$2,000 stipend and attendance at the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry.
February 1 for nominations

Financial aid and a network of support for first and second-year seminarians.

Three types:
  1. Congregational Fellowships provide substantial aid to first-year seminarians 35 years of age or younger through partnerships between FTE and individual congregations. Students must be nominated by their congregations.
  2. VEV Fellowships provide financial help and mentoring support for recent college graduates who have participated in one of 11 national faith-based volunteer programs partnering with FTE in its Volunteers Exploring Vocation initiative, and who are entering a Master of Divinity program. Candidates are recommended by supervisors in their respective VEV programs.
  3. Ministry Fellowships provide financial support to enhance the formation of ministerial leadership for second-year seminarians. For full-time students 35 years of age or younger in Master of Divinity programs at institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. Students must be nominated by the dean or president of their seminary.
Congregational Fellows:
FTE matches dollar for dollar the congregation's $2,000-$5,000 contribution to the Fellow's first-year costs. Congregational Fellows also attend the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry.

VEV Fellows:
Selected volunteers receive a $2,500 stipend for first-year tuition and living expenses and attend the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry.

Ministry Fellows:
FTE awards a $10,000 stipend for educational and living expenses and to fund a self-designed ministry project. Ministry Fellows participate in a Congregational Leadership Intensive and attend the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry.

Provides financial help and a network of support to African-American doctoral students preparing for careers in theological education and scholarly research.

Two types:
  1. Doctoral Fellowships for students entering doctoral programs to pursue careers on the faculties of theological schools
  2. Dissertation Fellowships for students at the final writing stage of their dissertation.
Doctoral and Dissertation Fellows:
Stipend of up to $15,000 and attendance at FTE's Doctoral Conference. Doctoral Fellowships are renewable for a second year, subject to evaluation of progress toward the degree.

Financial assistance to outstanding candidates who might not otherwise have the means to complete their studies. North American Doctoral Fellowships for talented students from racial and ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate programs; must be currently enrolled in Ph.D. or Th.D. program in theological or religious studies.
Stipend from $5,000 to $10,000; networking and advocacy support from FTE.

Partnerships between congregations and FTE to identify and support young people exploring ministry.

Our initiative:
Calling Congregations: Equips individual congregations to nurture gifted young people for ministry. Congregations receive support and resources for nurturing vocational discernment; students are nominated for fellowships by their congregations.
For Students: Congregational Fellowships: Congregations and FTE each contribute $2,000-$5,000 toward nominee's first year in seminary. Congregational Fellows attend the FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry.

For Congregations: Workshops and conferences; coaching and assistance; print resources; and Calling, an online journal.
Congregational Fellowships: April 1


Supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., Theological Programs for High School Youth give young people opportunities for theological study and vocational exploration. For high school students interested in exploring theology and vocation.
48 programs for high school youth at participating seminaries in the U.S. and Canada.
Various


Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation (PTEV) supports and oversees projects serving students, faculty and staff at participating colleges and universities; fosters collaboration and interaction among participating schools; and assists with disseminating learning. This program is not open to applicants.
Coordination of grants awarded by Lilly Endowment between 2000 and 2002 to 88 church-related colleges and universities.

A program to identify ways to ease the transition into ministry for new seminary graduates. The Transition into Ministry Program is for new ministers making the change from full-time student to full-time pastor. This program is not currently accepting grant applications.
